I don't think gifts are expected at an adult birthday party in North America, that is unless it's a very close friend, but even then it's optional.

Thanks for commenting!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15421142287093429996noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8160647031280507069.post-69605080593166822242011-07-09T21:04:44.274-03:002011-07-09T21:04:44.274-03:00did u expect them to bring u a dish and a gift? or...did u expect them to bring u a dish and a gift? or just the food in this case? how is normally done in the usa ?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8160647031280507069.post-89019112250129040712011-07-09T11:58:27.152-03:002011-07-09T11:58:27.152-03:00Hi Lindsey,

I (and everyone I know in NY) love potlucks--it's a town of food lovers and it gives everyone a chance to show off their culinary skills. If and when I move to Rio, I would love to do this. I'm sure I'd have to give lots of explanation, so people don't perceive it as rude... ha.Meilinahttp://venus-in-rio.tumblr.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8160647031280507069.post-83432954310184488412011-07-05T19:21:51.020-03:002011-07-05T19:21:51.020-03:00Because TRADITIONALLY the host provides food and d...Because TRADITIONALLY the host provides food and drinks for all guests.
(so guests think its not polite when the host ask them to bring food.)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8160647031280507069.post-2405100648565651072011-07-05T18:30:21.628-03:002011-07-05T18:30:21.628-03:00Y'see Anon, I just don't get that! It's not expensive at all for the guests and it allows the party to be way more diverse.
